Get to the following section to learn how to fix your IE about:blank problem.

The stupid cache:about:blank page

One day I tried the Google cache function with my Mozilla Google Toolbar on a blank page by accident and actually arrived at this isolated cache:about:blank google results page. It was populated with only one result, so I decided to do a page on that topic and see if anyone made the same mistake and was curious enough to click on the page and see what it was all about. So here it is! The stupid cache:about:blank page for your perusal! (comments on this page are now closed).

cache:about:blank and Mozilla

You can set many preferences and settings in your Mozilla and FireFox browser by using the about:config command in the location bar. It will display every variables under the sun, which you can set by double clicking on it. A great power user tool indeed! Just don't mess with anything you don't understand. There are other about: commands, such as about:mozilla, which generates some weird ass pseudo-religious babbling, or about:cache?device=disk to see the content of your cache. There are other tips of this kind at mozillatips.com. For the truly adventurous, you can even customize the interface by editing the userContent.css file to block ads, for example. Mozilla is wonderful for the tinkerer.

As mentionned earlier, another great tool for the sophisticated surfer is the Mozilla Firefox Google Toolbar, which give you quick and easy access to all the most exotic Google search options, including accessing its cache feature. Except for the pagerank function (which you can find separately with an extension of the Google Toolbar), it is the equivalent of the original Internet Explorer Google Toolbar. You can find many other enhancements to your Mozilla browser at Mozdev.org.

The IE about:blank problem

As someone pointed out in some of the comments, this page didn't have any documentation about the about:blank problem that is going on with Internet Explorer users these days. Well, that's because this page wasn't about this issue originally since I use FireFox and I'm not affected. But very well, if I can help some people get rid of this thing, I'll see what I can do. I have a friend who sells computers and he had to fix this virus/malware for many clients, so after using many free anti-spywares normally found on the internet, only CWShredder seemed to do the job, not the popular Ad-aware or SpyBot (note: from the users comments it seems if you update the reference file, ad-aware will get rid of it right now). You can also clean this manually using other utilities if CWShredder didn't work. I hope it helped! You might want to think of using an alternative browser in the future that is less prone to security problems. Or at least, and this is what I do with my parent's computer, set your internet security to HIGH in Tools | Internet Options... | Security, add your favorite sites in the Trusted Sites section and set the security level for this zone to Medium. This way you'll enjoy more fonctionalities such as cookies and javascript in your regular safe sites but will be protected when browsing strange sites

If all fails, I can suggest finding other free spyware removers. But after that, I'm outta resources. Read the user comments, some of them have good ideas.

Testimonials about the stupid cache:about:blank page

Thanks for leaving a comment! (I'm sorry but I will have to delete post with gratuitious profanities and spam). By the way, thanks to all the people trying to help others with the about:blank page problem for their intelligent posts.

Reset the the page browser by deleting the m in .com and readding the letter and then select reply. You circumvent about.blank (no counter digit returned for this page) and do yourself a big favor by keeping the constant reminder to clean your machine of unwanted goo. Bon appetit!

Comment: For those people whose homepage keeps resetting to "about:blank" (CoolWeb Search) no matter what you do, you can screw around doing this and that with your registry looking for renegade .dll files (are you serious?)or you can do what I did. No guarantees, but it worked perfectly for me:

1)Download/upgrade "Ad-aware" to version 6 (check for the latest updates also).
2)Download and unzip
"SmartKiller" CWS variant identifier freeware.
3)Download "CWShredder" with latest updates.
4)Disconnect from Internet, open IE, delete homepage address, enter yours, "apply", and close IE.
5)Run "SmartKiller" to determine which CWS variant you have. Hopefully one of the milder ones. That should give you a better idea of what you're up against. You should be able to eradicate milder variants without a lot of effort.
6)Run "CWShredder" to locate and eliminate CWS variant parasites.
7)Launch IE (off-line)and reset your home page address as required. If IE defaults to "about:blank", delete the address, enter your homepage address, "apply", close IE, and run a full Ad-aware6 search to remove any dead CWS remnants. Open IE off-line again and it should try to launch to your home page address. If not, reset your homepage address again,
"apply", close it, and then reopen it (off-line), and it should try to launch to your page and indicate that it can't find it. At that point
"about:blank" should be gone and you should be good to go. I've been running for 24 hours without IE or system problems. Ad-aware 6 is very good at identfying and cleaning up CWS variants but it will not eliminate them from your system. I know, I tried four full sweeps but they still regenerated. I was going to try using "Spybot" but there was no reference to CWS variants or "about:blank" in their list of recognized agents. From what I read on their website, Spybot is not designed to remove hijack agents. I recommend that you update your IE with latest security updates and tighten your personal security settings. Good luck!

Comment: I went to http://www.akadia.com/services/about_blank_virus.html
and followed directions for steps 1 & 2. (I found this search after doing a "about:blank" search on Microsoft's home page and reading an article.) Since I didn't have my system recovery cd handy at the time(required for step 3), I tried something and it worked. Instead of following step 3, after you've done 1 & 2, (make sure you've pasted the whole value in the reglite address bar) update or install (free) ad-aware 6.0. With reglite open and the Data Editor open from step 2 (you should have found and deleted the "visible" .dll file before this point), then simply run the ad-aware test and....bingo. I haven't dealt with the problem anymore and I didn't have to contribute money to the questionable anti-spyware sites. It was all free mixed with a little time. Note: I installed ad-aware only a day before I got the damn aboutblank problem and it wouldn't fix it until I did exactly what I just explained. Hope it helps and please do not contribute to these window salesman equivalents.

Comment: about:blank is a weak trick. I was angry at first, tried almost every spyware removal. Then, I figured making sp.htm "read-only", to see if about:blank would crash, and tell me what program it was running from. I was looking in the temporary folder in c:windows
and found two weird fiels that load every time you start IE. I wrote down the url's of both. Then went into Netscape 7 and got the spyware pop up, and then some type of html java script. It appeared as text, and contained random math, got them!!! This is the url for their code that runs forever:
It seems that the individuals whom did this feel guilty and probably stupid enough to give an uninstall program at the same url:

Once again this doesn't deserve to be called a virus, spyware or anything, only bad programming skills :)

Comment: I can't guarantee this solution will work for everyone but it certainly worked for me. It's so simple it's definitely worth a try.

I contracted the about:blank bug in May 2004 on my Windows 98 system. It's been driving me insane ever since. I couldn't even open my Hotmail without it reverting to the about:blank page.

Anyway, I read somewhere that the bug lives in files with extension ".dll". I checked and there were hundreds of them on my PC. Well, I took one last look at the about:blank website and made a note of some of the text on the page. Among the words on the webpage were phrases such as "pool cleaning" and "casino online". Another was "hydrocodone". I knew this word was unlikely to appear on many files in my PC so I chose it to use in locating the offending "dll" files. You can choose a similar rare word from your about:blank webpage.

Now, use Internet Options to clean out your temporary internet files and cookies etc. Now close Internet Explorer completely.

Open Windows Explorer and select: Tools > Find > Files or folders. In the "containing text" option write your unique word, eg "hydrocodone". Make sure the "look in" option covers your main C drive. Now choose "find now" and let your PC find all files containing this word.

After a few minutes your PC should have located all files containg the word "hydrocodone". Find any files with the dll extension and remember the file's name, date and time of creation.

Now, do another search on Windows Explorer: Tools > Find > Files or folders. Choose the "Named" option and write "dll". Now do the search. When the search is over sort the list by "modified" and look for the dll file containg the "hydrocodone" that you found earlier. Now look for other dll files that were created close to the same time as this file. They are probably about:blank files too.

Now open each file with Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at its text. Scroll through it and chances are you'll see other text that appeared on the original about:blank web page. Delete all these files and also those that were created at a time very close to them, even if they don't all contain the webpage text.

Now right-click on Internet Explorer (without opening it) and change the homepage to anything you like.

That's it.

I did this a week ago and the problem has vanished without trace.

Comment: kill the about:blank malware

I am running Windows XP Home on a mild custom machine.
I have had much difficulty with the about:blank scumware for a couple of months now.

I think I have finally fixed it.

Many suggestions include using CWS Shredder, and Hijack This. Those and other useful software targeted the nasty ware and worked, at least to an extent, and at least for a time. I tried everything I suggested, and ran many scans and attempted fixes. Recently, nothing seemed to be working anymore.

I downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 2, and thought that might do it, but the next day I was disappointed to learn it did not.

I think I have found a way to kill the About:Blank scourge using only Hijack This, but taking one extra step.

Using Hijack This, I scanned my system, then fixed everything that said "about:blank" and looked carefully at the items above and below it on the results page. I looked for anything else that looked related to about:blank, or that included the words "search assistant". I marked and fixed those also. About- and Search Assistant- related items typically appear at the top of the scan results page on Hijack This.

At the bottom of the page are typically two more identical related entries. My last ones looked like this:
o18 - Filter: text/plain - {DC102BF4 - 93BC - 4574 - 9FA2 - 6264F0C1B55C} - C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32ehe.dll

In fact, there seemed to be several "twins" or identical double entries of about:blank related items together in the results. The entire text of these last lines does not matter. Look at the last letters before .dll. Killing this entry is recommended in many fix columns on the net, but that doesn't work because this scourge just changes it next time you reboot, or even open and close Internet Explorer, notice the problem again, and scan once more with Hijack This. Next time instead of ehe.dll you may have jfpp.dll or gddea.dll or something similar. These last lines are a symptom, not the disease itself.

After fixing all about- and search-related items, I scanned again and looked carefully for something that kept coming up.
This is what it looks like:

R1 - HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = ;;localhost

This came up again and again on the top line of scan results with Hijack This, after I had marked and fixed all the other bad results in the Hijack This scan results. I began to mark and fix this also, but it would only stay gone temporarily, sometimes for only hours or even minutes. I highlighted this entry and asked Hijack This for more info on this one. Hijack This responded that it is part of the Registry. I was warned from other websites to be very careful changing Registry entries. I had approached this a bit before, so it was not unknown.

Here is what I did:
I took a deep breath and clicked on -
then on -
then typed in the box -
Then clicked -
Registry Editor then opened.

I began by looking at the left side of the newly opened box.
On my computer, it is the second folder below "My Computer" in this box.

I clicked on the + symbol next to it once, which opens more folders.
Following the suspicious R1 line above, I scrolled down a bit, I then clicked on the + symbol next to Software, scrolled more, then did the same on Microsoft, then Windows, then Current Version, then finally on Internet Settings. In this way, you follow folders within folders to get to what you want.

Since in that line, Internet Settings does not have a back slash to the right of it, what I want is actually inside the Internet Settings folder, and not in another sub-folder. I opened the Internet Settings folder by clicking on it once.

Then I looked at the large box to the right of the one in which I followed this stepping-down folder menu.

I scrolled down to find ProxyOverride = ;;localhost.

Once I found it, I right-clicked on that line and opened up a new, small box.
There are 4 choices -

Modify (typed in bold)
Modify Binary Data

I clicked once on Modify.

A new box opened with the following:
Value name:
Value data:;local host

The line under Value data, that includes local host, may be highlighted. It can be edited.
Click into that line and change it.

I did not actually delete anything, I just added the folliwng to the beginning of the Value data:

I did this because I read that adding a semi-colon to the beginning of a Registry entry neutralizes it without deleting it and taking the chance that you are doing something seriously wrong to your computer.

I added google because it is my home page, and because I like it. I have no excuse.

Now my new Value data entry looks like this:

Since I made this one change, I have not been assaulted with the about:blank garbage.

Good luck to all of you fighting with this scourge.

Comment: Got to love this about:blank crap if people can do this what else are we in store for. I have helped out a few people now with this problem only to find it effect each computer differently and still get the same about:blank crap. I have found that the easiest way to remove this is to download http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_Free_Edition_d886.html f
Use AVG free virus program run and delete all virus that it will come up it should also repair some files for you.
Then download highjackthis http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Program called HijackThis 1.99.1 version. When using this program be sure to delete anything that says about:blank or just words like it.
Then download aboutbuster http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?s=0eededb1b0f94b070cd19829617ef14a&showtopic=1488 click on begin removal then click fix.

Then down load Adaware and run this it will clean up your spyware. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ad-Aware_SE_Personal_d506.html

Then download spybot run this to make sure you have all spyware out of your system it is also a sypware cleaner. http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_d2471.html

Also use CWshredder it works from some computer but not for all.

Last thing run CCleaner 1.30.310rapCleaner Cleans the following: Internet Explorer Cache, History, Cookies, Index.dat. and other.

Follow the list in order and then restart your computer and it should be fine.

Comment: This problem is old like the earth. I got it all the times. Here is what I do: Logon as Administrator (Windows 2000), Right click on Internet Explorer Icon, click to Clear History, Delete Files..,,Settings,View Files..to delete all Cookies Files. Change the Home Page address whatever you want (ie: http://www.google.com). Close Internet Properties windows. Now, do this with your own risk: start Regedit, search (Ctrl F) for about:blank, it will be under Internet ExplorerMain. Right click on Main keyword then delete it! Continue searching by press F3 key and kill the Main again if it shows. Close Regedit.
Go on WinntSystem32, sort view files by Date to bring the newest files on top, if you find any files that have dates as new as the day you get the problem. Move these files to a save folder (in case you want to retrieve them using safe mode). Restart Windows, Logon Administrator, go online once to see if your home page is on, then close IE to disconnect the internet. Start Regedit, search for Internet ExplorerMain to see if your home page is still there. Modify Search Bar, Search Page, HOMEOldSP parameters as same as Start Page. Close Regedit. It’s done. If you logon users other than Administrator and see about:blank again, then do all above steps again for every other users.
Remember don’t mess with the register files (Regedit). If anyone say Don't do it, so don't do it..

Comment: About:Blank is HORRIBLE! I spent the last 3 days looking for a way to get rid of it and I finally found it. I tried everything but upon reboot, that damn home page came back. Here is what worked for me, it should work for you too. I have XP Pro. 1) Download Adware Away (I apologize for not having the link, but easily found on a google search). 2) Make sure you have Registrar Light (also easily found on a internet search). 3) Close Explorer and run Adware. It is a little confusing to figure out at first, but it specifically targets About:Blank. Clear out all of the spyware, hyjackers, adwares, and trojans (make sure you "Scan all" for each category. It will tell you where it found malwares, then click on the little Icon and click "remove" keep doing this till every "Scan all" = 0 malwares found. A little confusing, but worth spending a couple minutes figuring it out. 4) Now run Registrar Lite. At the top, click "Search", type in "About" in the search box and search in: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE". Scroll down the "Value" list until you get to all of the "About" listings. "About:Blank" should have two listings. Delete those only (not the other "About" listings). 5) Clear out your Temp Internet Files, Cookies, and History and reset your Home Page. 6) Reboot your computer and run Adware again to make sure there are no more malwares. This worked for me so far. I've tried EVERYTHING else including 5 other spyware programs to no avail. Please post any questions you have. This was SOOO frustrating to me I am happy to help anyone in need. Good Luck!

Good luck!

Comment: Spyware programs such as CWS about:blank hijacker are constantly upgraded to out-smart the anti-spyware programs that remove them. The situation is changing from day to day so what works today may fail tomorrow. In that sense they're worse than viruses. There are a number of programs that cause this problem and the easiest way to remove spyware is to use a commercial anti-spyware program that can also protect against new infections. If the anti-spyware program fails to remove the spyware then it's a new variant that needs to be added to the anti-spyware's definitions file. In that case contact the support desk for the anti-spyware program you have registered. Registered users should get personal assistance, and the anti-spyware techos should update their definitions file with the new variant. More info http://www.free-web-browsers.com/remove-about-blank.shtml

Comment: According to http://www.aboutblankremover.com/

How To Remove The About:Blank Virus
Have you been infected by the about:blank adware or spyware that takes control of your browser's home page? The about:blank adware/spyware can be removed with the top rated about blank removal program by QSA software. The about blank removal program removes hundreds of variants of spyware, adware, malware, as well as about:blank spyware.

The symptom that identifies the about:blank home page hijacker is that it appears as the address, but in the background a window pops up stating that spyware, adware or something similar has been found on your system. The simplest way to remove the about:blank spyware is to use a specially designed tool, named about blank remover and clean up your system of the about:blank spyware permanently.

Remove about:blank home page hijacker by first scanning your system with an antivirus program. If nothing is detected or the problem persists download and run about blank remover program. About blank remover is the best recommendation for effective about:blank removal because of its ability to remove a broad spectrum of malicious software. The about:blank home page problem can be caused by spyware, browser hijackers or even worms, all of which can be removed by about blank remover.

Once about blank adware is removed, your system will return to normal.

What Is About:Blank?
The about:blank hijack is a pesky form of spyware or adware that refuses to let you change your home page. To fix this about:blank hijack infection, you need a virus removal tool, about blank remover to eliminate and get rid of the about:blank hijack of your browser.

About:blank hijack is an extremely hard-to-kill hijacker. It comes back immediately or several hours later after removing its objects. It changes internet explorer home page to a 'about:blank', This is not a real blank page, but pointing to some commercial site or search engine site....

Comment: well im back for a "FULL PROOF REPORT" :
here is the deal,
1.I have downloaded mozzila firefox.
2.I scanned with Ad-Aware SE Personal after redownloading it.
3. I put my windows CD and done a reinstall over the last windows.
4. I reinstalled FireFox.

and you know what? I Lasted 2 monts with no additional spy ware but then my modem locked up so I FORMATED. but my guid now is :
1.backup important stuff.
2.Formatt & reinstall.
3.download mozzila's FireFox & install.
4.only use FireFox for all browsing and put some requried extentions and install Java.
5. only use Iexplorer for sites that requires it like windows update and only sites you trust (enough to give your hand to cut of in the name of there reputation!)

I had "NO SPYWARE" with firefox! so don't go F**king with no condoms! (or don't rub your self against a plagued guy unless your suit is more sealed then an astronaut suit) or simply don't surf with week programs and do regular miccrosoft update untill this site ant had a added post for one year "then" you may ise Iexplorer or if they come up with Iexplorer7 with the tecnology used by other browser or atleast change all the defense (Microsoft! they know your maze so no use putting more guns just target the crap all over and study then come up with a restriction list incripted in a double 2048 bit incripted file even if it takes 120 mhz just to load up Iexplore we mostly have 350&+!) well hopes it helps!

Comment: About:Blank REMOVED FOR GOOD.

HijackThis program ? it is free to download.

Here is what you do:

1. Open HijackThis program
2. Click Config
3. Put a checkmark in the Mark everything found for fixing after scan.
4. Click Back
5. Click Scan
6. Click Fix checked

1. Click Config
2. Click Misc Tools
4. Click Scan (this will find all hidden files that you will not see in the explorer)
5. Select all items (this has to me done manually)

That?s it. The bugger was gone for good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to point out something here.

I am not a novice with computers, but was reluctant to remove all the selected items (found by the Open ADS Spy), but pretty much had no choice.
I was afraid that I will screw up my machine.

I DID NOT. The machine started like brand new.

Comment: I checked this cache because I was tryin' to get rid of "about:blank". I tried various solutions, even replacing my hard disk but it kept on coming back. This time I bought a new PC because a friend of mine, professional software producer, told me that nomatter what you try to erase, there is always some trace left behind on your hard disk. This time I started up with a new PC and secured it with Norton Internet Security 2005, Ad-Aware, Spyblaster and last but not least Mozilla Firefox. I hope this time I will stay clear from "about:blank" and other Cool Web Search variants. Nevertheless, after carefully browsing through various articles about this problem I came up with this idea: everywhere I found this CWShredder solution. I don't know who is the author of this program, nor who benefits, but it seems to me that somewhere there are several little software companies who are re-adjusting these "about:blankl" files in order to get there products sold. Maybe they work together, I don't know, but it seems to me that if deleting the "about:blank"-dll's can be done without any problem by one or two programs, it can't be so difficult for the greater companies (Norton, Microsoft, ...) to launch a program that can fix this problem. But nothing happens. So, either these large companies find some benefit in NOT looking for a solution, either they have some kind of an agreement with the small companies. Anyway, someone, somewhere benefits from this racket and it seems to me this is one big mob-thing. After doing some serious thinking I came up with this possible solution: if all the Internet-surfers throughout the world who were or are pested with this "about:blank" thing opened a forum on one specific website, and launched a unanimous international complaint against the Internet-providers this might result in a law-suit. With a little bit of luck the outcom might be that Internet-providers would be legally forced to add filters to their main servers so that filth like "about:blank" could never in any way reach the PC's of the surfers. Anyone interested? For the time being, put your answers in this forum. If there are enough candidates we might open a special website. Greetings and good luck, Speedy from Belgium.

Comment: Can someone offer some advice to get rid of this problem on a Win98 system (using I.E.6.0)?
The system has been infected by this piece of #$%@&^ and everything I have found so far, explains removing it from new versions of Windows.
I have downloaded HijackThis. It locates the corruption and I remove it. Unfortunately, it only removes it temporarily. Boot the system and it's back. So are the continuous pop-ups. I've tried RegLite, but it appears to be developed for XP. Any thoughts..please?
Thanks in advance.

Comment: As of yet; Nobody's written a decent account of what exactly About:Blank, actually is. Personally, I find the term 'hijacker' to be very misleading. To hijack something is to seize absolute control, whereby the victims are stripped of any power whatsoever - but About:Blank doesn't have these features. Instead, you could view About:Blank as a psychological mind-game, where the only way to win is to 'know your enemy'. Let me explain:

What the coders of this specific mal-ware [bad software] have recognised, is that there's a pattern to how mal-ware is 'figured out'. Generally, there's a certain process to be undertook in fixing these sort of problems, but About:Blank is a case-for-case scenario, ie each infection is unique. However, the coders would have us believe otherwise [so that we'd think the problem's fixable. But the problem is infact, very unique indeed ].

Each case of About:Blank is different. Fact. Every so often, somebody receives a 'weak' infection - and successfully rids their system of their mal-ware. This usually provokes them to post messages, telling everyone proudly how they managed to kick their specific brand of About:Blank [thinking they're helping others, but in-fact they're degrading any chance there is of kicking the mal-ware for good]. Meanwhile, the super-stealth strains remain on the not-so lucky user's hard-drive - and the anxiety lives on.

The creators seemed to have entered the minds of the do-gooders that post messages just like this one, and acted accordingly. Sadly, About:Blank behaves differently on different hard-drives due to a frightening number of variants. This is the genius, yet also the crux of the issue. Never before has something varied so much, and for this reason, the anti-virus vendors prove useless in tackling the issue. The fact that the mal-ware changes your homepage is just a 'cherry on the tree', in terms of the methods the software uses to push its products onto you.

So, what can be done? At the moment, very little can be done, because:

1.) Most programmers fail to accept the psychological nature of About:Blank, and understand that each problem is unique. Only when programmers realise this, can they design more suitable workarounds for the problem.

2.) The more finer programmers [what we need to combat About:Blank] generally accept that Internet Explorer is evil, and refuse to have anything to do with it. [Mainly because IE has serious security holes]

3.) Programmers are too busy working on anti-mal-ware programs designed to combat more destructive types of software. [About:Blank is certainly annoying, but a relatively mild problem compared to others].

Please let me hear your thoughts...

Comment: What we all should do is not use IE until gates and his mob sort all this out. Sp2 pack was a total joke! What is wrong with a program that after re-formatting and re-installing all software, takes a snapshot of your registry and such like, and then at every boot up scans your system for whatever has changed or been added to the registry. It could highlight the additions or changes and give you the option to delete it completely. This should be free software.

Comment: This works for me; I copied it off Geeks to Go by author Exterminator I believe.

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

2. Remove Infections

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

Run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R0 - HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain,Start Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {F9C17427-371D-0928-0CFC-D2BAD2884B31} - C:WINNTsystem32sdksc32.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM..Run: [d3ph.exe] C:WINNTd3ph.exe
O4 - HKLM..Run: [sdksc32.exe] C:WINNTsystem32sdksc32.exe
O4 - HKLM..Run: [atlfp.exe] C:WINNTatlfp.exe
O4 - HKLM..Run: [winmo32.exe] C:WINNTwinmo32.exe
O4 - HKLM..Run: [iezm.exe] C:WINNTsystem32iezm.exe

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

4. Delete Rogue files

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch. It will open the folder Prefetch. Delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report.

Very helpful; the Ewido security suite has some nice stuff that my Norton's full version lacks that I like. Easily checking your startup, and disabling things that don't look right. I got rid of the CWS, and all its annoying stuff first try, and every time since then with this advice. I suggest putting it all together in a folder, so you can find it all together when you need it.

Comment: I've been pissed off about a seemingly different version of about:blank. Whenever I close a document folder like My Documents, I.E. pops open an about:blank page. It doesn't matter if I'm online or not. I haven't seen anyone else with this version. Any cures?

Comment: about:blank gets in your registry and hijacks internet explorer, I just spent 3-weeks trying to get rid of it w/o having to slick my hard drive. The shameless bastards that run this hijacker offer a fix for $29.95 called "remove about:blank buddy" for $29.95, but guess what? it doesn't remove it...it installs it better. Bottom line here...spyware doctor gets rid of it. Download it. Run it. Go to remove progams and click uninstall. An offer will come up for $9.95 (quarterly payment..cancelable) Get the reg code and register. Big relief.

Comment: I am actually running Firefox 1.5 on Kubuntu 6.06 (well I guess you can tell that from your logs) but I was trying to view the content at www(dot)wiredwriter(dot)net/index(dot)html?page=Tutorials#flash - every site references this amazing Flash install tutorial but the stupid page just wouldn't load... not even a little bit. Hence, when I checked the content in Google's cache, I went directly to the Google search results for cache:about:blank. This page is absolutely hilarious except for all the guys who are very upset by browser hijack issues. This is the main reason why I am in the process of transitioning to Kubuntu: the ol' Win2K b0x got zombified one too many times and I got pissed. IMO, when you've got some app on your machine hammering Google to the tune of a million queries/second, it's time to think about switching to a more secure OS. Anyway, thanks for an interesting and entertaining page! Happy browsing.

Comment: I found this place because I was looking for any possible explanation as to why Opera couldn't save an image that was from an address that had expired. Google brought me here.

I assumed, like any normal user, that once an image is loaded, I can leave it there and click 'Save As' whenever I feel like it. But no, oh no, not with Mr. Opera. If the page holding the image expires, you are basically down the river without a paddle.

So to all those pimping Opera on this site, I say to you, "Eat one please, Mister, or Miss." The only reason I'm using Opera as of right now is because it uses less RAM than Firefox on my laptop. Period. The very SECOND Firefox gets it memory leaking act together, I am switching right back to it pronto.

But, cute little site you got here. Pity I had to find it while being mad as hell over Opera's 'little' idiosyncrasy. I wouldn't even have commented if not for the post telling people to use Opera. Oh puhleese.

Comment: Hack A Search Result Back From That Stupid "About:Blank' Page Into The Cache Google Promised You

an excerpt:

"Picture this: There you are, grooving along quietly to yourself, O Intrepid Yet Gentle Reader, happily enjoying an Internet still (mostly) as Free as Our Creator Intended, making use of your mind, exploiting your curiosity, following your particular whim, building proof of an hypothesis, indulging in a fetish, uncovering published secrets, or what-have-you. You expect a certain page to be 404 file-not-found, or you want the page before the latest update, or redaction, or backpedaling, or perhaps the information was only accidently disclosed, and has since been hastily re-sequestered in the bowels of a secret directory of some shamelessly vast database...

...In any event, you bet the chances are good it will be intact and whole in Google's cache of the page. Eagerly you click on it when BAM!

I have never met an about-colon-blank outcome to a google search result that was NOT a complete and ugly LIE..."
